MedAwareness’s Contribution To Project Concern International’s Project In Malawi
Project Concern International (PCI), a global non-profit received a donation of two mobile refrigerators by Medawareness in support of the HIV/AIDS Prevention in the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) program funded by the U.S. Department of Defense in 2013.
An important objective of the program is to increase the availability of safe blood and strengthen laboratories within the MDF clinics to support HIV and tuberculosis prevention and treatment activities. The donated refrigerators were allocated to two MDF units: Moyale and Mvera Support Battalion. Providing additional refrigeration units will further the substantial increase in laboratory capacity around the country for laboratory reagents, blood samples for CD4 (T-cell counts), and vaccines which will now be able to be kept on site while awaiting processing.
These refrigerators are also solar powered, which allows them to continue cooling the samples and vaccines during the frequent blackouts that occur throughout the country.
The MDF would be interested in providing refrigerators to the additional 11 units throughout Malawi to further develop laboratory capacity, with Chilumba, Kasungu, Changalume as the priority units.
